A portrait of Chewie the Chihuahua.
This was my fourth watercolor painting. Progress was slow because I was worried about going too dark by accident. I was crazy busy and working full time when I originally made this piece; I wish I had a bit more time to devote to painting back then, but c’est la vie.
This is the first progress shot I took! Most of the work went into his face and sweatshirt. I was worried the brown fabric would be too over saturated compared to the rest of the image, but honestly it came out looking more or less exactly like the photo.
Here he is! I went back and forth on how I wanted to do the background, then decided to just eliminate some of the clutter from the original reference photo to keep the focus on Chewie. I'm particularly happy with the cool lighting-vs-warm shadows.
